Strawberry Fair: a community story worth capturing

Community effort, creative opportunities and the photographers helping tell the story of Cambridge’s free festival.

A community event gives photographers something valuable: a reason to get involved.

On 6 June 2026, Social Photography joined Strawberry Fair as official event creatives, covering photography and videography. Our post that evening described why it mattered: opportunities for members to gain experience while contributing to Cambridge’s creative life.[1]

The story reaches far beyond our cameras.

Strawberry Fair is independent, free to enter and organised by volunteers. Its history stretches back to an alternative fair in 1973, followed by the first June event carrying the Strawberry Fair name in 1974. After taking a year off in 2025, it returned in 2026.[2]

That return had community effort behind it. The Cambridge Buskers Festival organisers report that their 2025 festival brought performances to 12 city venues and raised more than £8,000 towards Strawberry Fair 2026. Musicians, organisers, volunteers and supporters helped make another day on the Common possible.[3]

For Social Photography, taking part connected our members’ creative work with that wider effort.

Two days later, we shared another reason to celebrate: a member’s photograph had been selected for Strawberry Fair promotional material. Our post credited @sojourner_uk, recognising the photographer behind the image.[4]

That individual recognition matters. A community can open a door; the person who makes the photograph deserves the credit.

This is the purpose behind Social Photography: helping people meet, practise, contribute and build a body of work through shared experiences. We want photography to feel less solitary, with opportunities to become part of the communities around us.

Strawberry Fair gave that idea a place to happen.
